HER Build

Our new, secure, fully accessible 24,000 square foot complex consists of two distinct but linked buildings. Scheduled for completion in late 2019, this welcoming, evidence-based design is a first for anti-violence shelters in Canada.

Secure, welcoming, accessible emergency residence

  • 17 flexible bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom; 40% are barrier-free
  • Shared space: social spaces and quiet sitting areas/lounges, multiple children’s program rooms, tech lounge and meditation room
  • 2 kitchens (1 industrial and 1 for residents’ own use)
  • Bright communal dining room open to secure back yard
  • Exercise room
  • Pet kennels (Toronto’s first purpose-built kennels in an anti-violence shelter)
  • Outdoor living area including: dining and cooking space, outdoor wood burning oven, education centre, gardens with space for culturally specific foods and indigenous medicines, play areas

Accessible community services building

With its emphasis on therapeutic design and the empowering, healing impact of arts-based programming here we will provide critical anti-violence supports to women in community who are experiencing violence at home but who are not in shelter.

  • Unique onsite trauma-specific primary health clinic
  • 1,000 sq. ft. multi-purpose room
  • Therapeutic counselling rooms for on-site mental health counselling
  • Children’s Healing program
  • Tech centre for safe computers/internet access for women who are impacted by violence
  • Unique legal support for high risk cases
