Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation donates $150,000

With this latest donation, in just one short year the Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation has raised over $250,000 against their $1 million fundraising goal in support of our new, anti-violence centre.

We are so grateful to this incredible organization and amazing family for their dedication to creating a powerful legacy in Anne Marie’s name to help hundreds of women and children impacted by violence and help put an end to gender-based violence itself.

Together, the Anne Marie D’Amico Foundation and North York Women’s Shelter are taking a strong stand in addressing and ending violence against women.

A woman is murdered in Canada every 2.5 days. Toronto’s violence against women shelters have an 80% turn-away rate due to a lack of beds. Services accessible to both those in shelter and also survivors in the community are more urgent than ever.

In response, North York Women’s Shelter is building an onsite community health clinic – a revolutionary model unlike any in Canada. Operated in partnership with Black Creek Community Health Centre, this trauma-informed clinic is part of co-located community wrap-around services that meet the safety concerns and unique needs of women and children impacted by violence.

Thanks to an inspiring $116,000 donation from the 2019 Shoppers Drug Mart Growing Women’s Health Campaign, we have created a one of a kind space where survivors know they can come for safe, knowledgeable and non-judgmental medical and social services.

$40,000 gift funds the GTA’s first on-site pet facilities in a women’s shelter

Thanks to the generosity of PetSmart Charities of Canada, the new, NYWS will have housing rooms for dogs and cats, an outdoor dog run, a dedicated room for feeding and grooming and a lounge where pets and their owners can enjoy each other’s company.

Our new pet facilities will enable women experiencing violence to seek a safe refuge for themselves, their children and their pets—so that no one is left behind. For years, we’ve witnessed our clients struggling with the difficult decision of leaving behind a beloved pet and we’re committed to ensuring that having a pet is never a reason to stay in an abusive relationship or home.

2019 Yorkville Run participants raised $22,193

In our first year participating, our amazing team of 40, ran or walked 5k to surpass our goal and raise enough money to build, outfit and furnish a family bedroom with en-suite at the new North York Women’s Shelter.

What a great day! Looking forward to the 2020 event on September 13!
