Creating Seasons of Wellness with TD
SHARE

At North York Women’s Shelter, we understand that the individuals and families that come to our shelter carry with them trauma from their unique experiences of violence. One way we support their healing is through nature-based programming inspired by Indigenous teachings.
Nature plays a critical role in healing for those who have faced violence. It offers a safe, non-judgmental environment that helps with emotional regulation and grounding, restoring a sense of safety and rebuilding personal agency. Exposure to nature has been linked to lower levels of stress, reduced anxiety, and improved mood.
Seasons of Wellness
This year, we implemented our ‘Seasons of Wellness’ initiative to strengthen our Indigenous healing garden for our residents to better enjoy. Under the guidance of Elder Sandy Jackson as our consultant, we transformed a backyard garden space into a vibrant, accessible outdoor environment where women, gender-diverse individuals and children healing from gender-based violence can participate in environmental education, learn traditional Indigenous knowledge, and deepen their connection to the land.
Following a revitalization of our Indigenous medicine wheel, our residents had the opportunity to learn about the traditional significance of sacred herbs through hands-on planting and educational activities. Our consultant Indigenous Elder taught them about the healing and medical properties of each plant, and the participating families gained practical gardening experience and ecological knowledge which they will carry forward with them even after they leave shelter.
The medicine wheel, now bright, colourful and well-loved, will be maintained year-round, giving families the opportunity to appreciate the fruits of their labour in all seasons. The herbs are being harvested and used in shelter activities and individually by survivors to support them through their difficult days. This project has significantly promoted health, mental wellbeing and sustainable living.

To Our Supporters
North York Women’s Shelter gives their heartfelt gratitude to the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation for funding the Seasons of Wellness program.
Through their support for this initiative, we have fostered a greater connection to nature and increased cultural awareness for survivors of gender-based violence, while promoting community engagement and a sense of belonging for our shelter community.
