The York Lions Women’s Hockey players shared their reasons for their commitment against Gender-Based Violence
Throughout the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, North York Women’s Shelter was proud to partner with a number of individuals and community groups who are united in our common vision to end gender-based violence. One of our new exciting relationships this year was with York Lions Women’s Hockey, a wonderful group of young women whose allyship for our cause absolutely shone through their November campaign against GBV.

On Thursday, November 27th, York Lions Women’s Hockey dedicated their Carleton Ravens matchup to the Elimination of Violence Against Women & Girls initiative – with the aims of both raising awareness about gender-based violence and supporting survivors in the community. The Lions were proud to use this platform to spark conversation, promote education, and stand in solidarity with those affected – including families living here at North York Women’s Shelter.
Player Abby Hicks spearheaded the event because of how commonplace gender-based violence can be in the world of sport. Abby and fellow players joined together to sign a pledge to eliminate violence against women and girls, and each shared their reasons for their allyship.
They stand with NYWS against gender-based violence because,
“Every voice raised helps create change”.
“Everyone deserves to live without fear and play the sport they love”.
“No one should ever have their worth, safety or future taken from them”.
“Enough is enough”.
To Abby and your whole team – our thanks go out to you for bringing attention to this important issue, believing women players, and ensuring that this conversation becomes louder for future generations of sportswomen to know they are supported and protected.
